But we need them (illegal workers)!
No, we do not, not anymore than we "need" Walmart. They are both a convenience, but we can survive easily without either.
In fact, their are two major differences between Illegal workers and Walmart:
1. Walmart is legal, illegals are not.
2. Walmart saves us money, illegals COST us money.
It may be true that illegals save employer's money, but that extra profit is usually pocketed by the employer and not passed on to the customer. And even if it were passed on, the higher costs of the illegals far out weighs any savings.
The only reason people believe the "we need them" argument is because they don't take time to think about. But stop and consider the facts. The INS estimates that 20% of those caught on the border have criminal records. That means 1 out of 5 illegals immigrants probably comes here with criminal intent (ignoring the obvious point that they have all broken our laws to get here in the first place.) Almost 30% of those in US prisons are foreign born. And each of those costs between $25,000 to $35,000 a year to guard, feed and provide health care to. That equals billions in wasted funds, not to mention the pain and economic costs suffered by the victims of their crimes. Meanwhile, they get free health care provided because our hospitals are not allowed to turn anyone away, and they have no assets to place leans against. All the births, operations, or whatever else has to be paid by the rest of us. (No wonder health care is rising so fast.) And property taxes? Most go to send kids to public schools, and illegal immigrant children are the fasting growing % of those budgets. They cost about $6,000 per student, but they aren't paying property taxes, we are! Oh, and don't forget that they slow down the rest of the class with language problems. It's the reason California went from some of the best rated schools to 49th in the nation. Way to go California!
Do you really believe that Mexicans are genetically different from anyone else? Of course not. The main difference between them and our workers if that they will work for less because they don't pay income taxes, and are more desperate.
Americans WILL do the same work, but not for the same pay. We expect more because we have to pay more. We have to pay Social Security taxes, and Income Taxes. Morever, the employer is supposed to pay Workman's Comp and Unemployment. If we think these taxes are unfair, we should repeal them. Letting employers break the law and hire illegals under the table is not the honest answer.
