Daily Bulletin Letters Two "Letters to the Editor" from the 12/28/97 Edition of The Daily Bulletin
Christian is hardly honoring his faith As exposed in your Dec 21 front-page story, is in always sad to learn of the existence of people like Jack Chick and Alberto Rivera. People suspect that pathetic narrow-minded hatemongers, like cocaine sellers and rapists, exist, but not in their own neighborhood. Judging from your story, Mr. Chick seems to be an equal-opportunity bigot. If his goal is to attack everyone who neither thinks exactly like he does, nor attends his church, if indeed he has found one that would welcome his views, he has probably succeeded. In these special days, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, it seems unreal that some people who call themselves Christians have so totally lost touch with his teaching. -William D. Srack, Upland
Chick hardly alone in his view of Catholics I believe you showed fairness in Dec. 21's front page article about Jack Chick. I would like to add two observations to help clarify the issue. Firstly, Jack Chick is not the real issue here, but rather that of conflicting authorities, namely the Holy Bible vs. the unscriptural teachings and traditions of the Catholic system. A born-again Christian who holds to the Bible as the sole authority of truth knows that God's salvation is a free gift, given by His grace to whosoever will receive it by faith. The Lord Jesus Christ lived a sinless life and died the death we all deserve to purchase our pardon by His precious blood on Calvary. God punished His Son in our place, so we the ungodly could be declared righteous before Him and receive eternal life, without our own works, effort or merit. Salvation was accomplished and finished on Calvary's cross by God Himself. The Catholic system adds the necessity of good works and the "sacraments" to enable one to hopefully merit eternal life, with no real assurance as such. All cults add to the sufficiency of Jesus Christ's finished work to save sinners. Secondly, Jack Chick is in no way alone in his position on the Vatican. The greatest spiritual leaders and reformers in history - Wycliffe, Tyndale, Martin Luther, Calvin, Knox, John Wesley, John Bunyan, Charles H. Spurgeon and countless others - all believed the Roman church was a fraud and the papacy was the seat of the Anti-Christ. They did however love the precious Catholic people and sought to lead them to the truth. This is all historical record. Jack Chick is certainly not the first to hold this same view. If you truly love people, you will speak the truth in love. -Randall C. Chapman, Chick Publications, Rancho Cucamonga |
