The Hallucination Hangar...

How did such a horrible thing happen?

Like in most such instances, it was an accident of science.

Greenblade Operating

Greenblade wasn't always insane. He was once a brilliant physician, excited about new discoveries in mental science from other pioneers in the field like Dr. Walter Freeman. Greenblade wanted to help the mentally damaged children of Sunland Asylum, but he started noticing that a significant percentage of his patients had the same disturbing nightmares. They claimed they were haunted by dead patients from the same hospital, but being a man of science, Greenblade refused to consider such an explanation. Instead, he believed they were telling each other their dreams and contaminating everyone's memories of what their subconscious experienced at night. Then he realized that even children in the isolated wards were describing the same dire dreams. He felt there had to be a scientific reason for an otherwise unexplainable coincidence. So like a good doctor, he set out to solve the problem.

Greenblade needed access to the part of the brain responsible for dreams. As one of Sunland's top doctors, he used his position as lead lobotomist to extract fluid from the pineal gland of several patients. That gland (also called the epiphysis cerebri, or the "third eye") is a small endocrine gland. It produces melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns, intensity of dreams, and photoperiodic (seasonal) functions.

Peneal Gland

Using enzymes from the sample fluid, Greenblade was able to synthesize a liquid aerosol that could be inhaled through the nose and absorbed near the brain stem (located directly behind the nasal passages). Once inside the brain, the enzymes quickly multiply and concentrate around the Medulla Oblongata, causing oxygen in the blood supply to surge, which in turn, elevates the subconscious brain functions. The result is hallucinatory "visions" that make the participant think they are entering a strange dimension of time and space. Objects seem to float around them, and inanimate things come to life. Apparitions materialize and often "attack" the paranoid subject, making them duck to avoid contact, while those unexposed to the aerosol see nothing unusual at all.

Bad Visions

Unfortunately, Greenblade experimented on himself using a concentration that was too great, and he descended into a mental meltdown that left him not unlike the patients he was trying to help. But while in his hallucinogenic stupor, he scribbled out a modification to the formula that allows anyone to temporarily see exactly what he (and the other mental patients) saw in their darkest nightmares, without any permanent harm. We made these adjustments and tested it on lab animals without any serious lasting effects. (Although several vegetarian chimps did take on a unusual hunger for meat.) This minor side effect* aside, we feel confident it is now ready for phase II public trials.

And this is where YOU can help. When you visit our Sunland exhibit at the Terror of Tallahassee, you will be given the opportunity to enter the Hallucination Hangar at NO EXTRA CHARGE. (We are admitting you free in exchange for you submitting to this test trial.) You will be sprayed with the formula so you can see what Greenblade and others at Sunland saw that drove them to the state of madness they experienced. If all goes according to plan , these effects will quickly wear off. (If not, you may stay and join our Sunland family.)

Due to the experimental nature of this trial, no one will be forced to enter. You will be at the end of the regular tour and may leave without any exposure to the drug if you desire. But don't you want to help science?

See results of the experimental trial.

*Please note: Vegetarians are encouraged NOT to participate if they wish to remain vegetarian.

Warning: Intense Darkness and Extreme Situations. NOT recommended for children.

Not responsible for nightmares or nervous conditions resulting from exposure to this exhibit.
